Preventive Medicine Unit

The Department of Community Medicine is one of the para-clinical departments of Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences. The objective of this Department is to provide a high quality training in Community Medicine to the under graduate medical students enrolled for MBBS and post graduate medical students enrolled for MD Community Medicine.

The other activities of the Department are to conduct basic research, conduct training programs and to provide promotive, preventive and curative health services to the community for the health and welfare of the people.

The department runs a rural health training centre (RHTC) situated in hosabyrohally about 13 Kms from Bangalore. It was established in the year 1983. The RHTC has a well equipped AV aids, training hall and mess. Staffs, Post Graduate & Interns are posted to the RHTC.

The department also runs an urban health training centre (UHTC) situated in Yarabnagar, about 0.5 kms from the KIMS Hospital.

In KIMS Hospital & Research Center, the department runs the Preventive Medicine Unit (PMU) which has a anti rabies clinic, allergy clinic and adult immunization clinic. Clincal trials and other research projects are conducted in the unit. The department has an annual intake of 6 MD seats.

Allergy Clinic

The facilities available in the department are as per the requirement of NMC . The following are some of them

I.Department

•SEMINAR HALL-There are two well equipped seminar halls having projector, internet, smart tv(65 inch TV), computer and audio visual aids with one of the seminar halls in addition having interactive white board and camera used extensively for undergraduate and post graduate training.

•PRACTICAL HALL - is used to train under graduates and post graduates in practical aspects of public health.

•RESEARCH LAB: The research lab has a statistical cell, computer, internet and reference materials for students to enhance the research skill with the faculty.

•DEPARTMENT LIBRARY: has the latest National and International Journals, books, , volumes and computer with internet facility.

•MUSEUM - The museumexhibits information on the various aspects and components of public health

•POST GRADUATE –The post graduates have individual cubicles with internet for academic learning.

The centre is also involved in research work including dissertation and PhD topics, which have a direct beneficial effect on patient care and needs.


II.RURAL HEALTH TRAINING CENTRE, HOSABYROHALLY

The department of Community Medicine runs the Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) Hosabyrohally and is situated about 18 KMs from KIMS, Banashankari. The RHTC caters to the health care needs of the rural population ,has an Out Patient Department (OPD),facilities for patient examination , minor surgical procedures room with basic laboratory investigations, ILR and Deep Freezer for routine immunization. The RHTC has a well equipped AV aids training hall with white board, TV, LCD projector & computer with power backup used extensively for undergraduate, Interns and post graduate training.

There exists an MOU with three Primary Health Centers namely PHC Kengeri, K. Gollahally and PHC Sullikere and the department works in close coordination with them in day to day functioning and implementation of all the national programmes, etc.


III.URBAN HEALTH TRAINING CENTRE, Yarabnagar

The Department of Community Medicine runs the Urban Health Training Centre(UHTC),Yarabnagar. The UHTC has an Out Patient Department (OPD), facilities for patient examination with basic laboratory investigations to cater for the urban poor. The UHTC has a well equipped AV aids training hall with white board, TV & computer with power backup. The UHTC is used for undergraduate, Interns and Post graduates field visits, family study and implementation of national program. There is an MOU with UPHC, Yarabnagara, where Interns and Post Graduates are posted for routine activities


IV.PREVENTIVE MEDICINE UNIT, KIMSHR&C

• ANTI RABIES CLINIC

The Anti Rabies Clinic(ARC) provides comprehensive treatment (Pre exposure ,re exposure & post exposure prophylaxis) for all animal bites cases and acts as referral hospital to patients from many districts. Apart from dog bite management, the centre is actively involved in conducting rabies biological phase-II,III and IV clinical studies.

• ALLERGY CLINIC

Allergy clinic provides comprehensive preventive, diagnostic (Skin prick test) and curative treatment(Immunotherapy) for allergy patients. Clinical trials and epidemiological studies in field of allergy and asthma are conducted regularly. It is the first centre in India to have conducted research studies on Rush allergen Immunotherapy and cluster allergen immunotherapy.

• ADULT IMMUNIZATION

The Preventive Medicine Unit is also an adult vaccination centre with all the recent vaccines including covid 19 vaccine made available .The centre is also used for clinical trials.

• VACCINATION CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL TRAVELLERS & CERTIFICATION

The Preventive Medicine Unit is a recognized vaccination centre for International travellers and provides certification for the same.

Post Exposure Prophylaxis -IDRV and RIG administration for the Open WHO Course on Rabies & One Health: From basics to cross-sectoral action to stop human rabies deaths, August,2021.

The ARC clinic, Preventive Medicine Unit, Department of Community Medicine, KIMSH&RC , Bangalore –was involved in the development of video training module on Post Exposure Prophylaxis - IDRV and RIG administration for the Open WHO course on rabies and one health From basics to cross-sectoral action to stop human rabies deaths during, August, 2021. State level National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme [NTEP] under graduate quiz 2021 

The state level State level National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme [NTEP] quiz 2021 was conducted by Dept. of Community Medicine & Pulmonary medicine at Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore. The quiz was conducted in two rounds with College round conducted on 8th September 2021 across 42 medical colleges in Karnataka which was coordinated by KIMS, Bangalore and final round was held on 14th September, 2021 at KIMS College, Banashankari.

COVID Vaccine Trial

Department was involved in the Phase -III covid 19 vaccine trial from July ,2021 and day 90 follow up is currently ongoing .The study is funded by Serum Institute of India, Pune under ICMR directions.

ASSESSING THE BURDEN OF COVID-19 IN THE SLUMS OF BANGALORE CITY

The department was involved in a multi centric study on the rapid assessment on the burden of covid-19 in the slums of bangalore city: a collaborative study from RGUHS, BBMP, TAC and KACH”. RTPCR testing and Blood samples were taken from 60 subjects in the slums attached to the UHTC and test positivity and seroprevalence was assessed and report submitted

COVID 19 Vaccination

The Preventive Medicine Unit, Department of Community Medicine,KIMSH&RC, Bangalore is involved in the covid 19 vaccination of the health care providers, followed by the elderly and the general population. About 7000 plus beneficiaries have been vaccinated till date.

Guest Lecture: COVID-19 an update

Dr. M K Sudarshan, Chairman, Technical Advisory Committee, Government of Karnataka, August,2020: A guest lecture on Covid19 in Karnataka: An update was delivered by Dr. M K Sudarshan, Chairman, Covid19 Technical advisory committee, Government of Karnataka on 18-08-2020 from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm at PG seminar hall, Community Medicine, KIMS, Bangalore. The talk was followed by question and answer sessions.

Combined Model qualitative study,ICMR multicentric study

A combined model study to investigate the challenges faced byfrontline health managers at district level in pandemic of COVID-19 in Bangalore Urban was conducted by the department as part of the Multicentric approach-ICMR study -August to September,2020. The study involved interview of key stake holders in covid 19 management including the BBMP Commissioner ,DHO,DSO and Health Officer.

Rapid appraisal of district level preparedness and performance of health system regarding management of COVID-19 cases ,Bangalore urban district ,Government of Karnataka.June,2020

The staff of the department along with the departments of Medicine and Microbiology were involved in the appraisal of district level preparedness and performance of health system regarding management of COVID-19 cases ,Bangalore ,Government of Karnataka.June,2020. They had visited the Covid care centres, Dedicated Covid hospitals, covid laboratories, border check post, bustands and quarantine lodges and submitted the report to the government.

COVID – 19 BBMP Special Task-Force Team (STFT) Contact Tracing and Quarantine,18thMarch -May,2020

The staff, PGs and Interns of KIMS were a part of the BBMP special task force for the community surveillance and contact tracing of COVID 19 from 24thMarch 2020 to May, 2020.The team conducted primary and secondary contact tracing along with fever and COVID 19 symptomatic survey. The team also educated the community about the personal protective measures like hand washing, social distancing and wearingmask.A total of 600 households were visited per day.

COVID-19 CRITICAL CARE SUPPORT TEAM (CCST) April-August,2020

For the first time in our country, Govt. of Karnataka launched the ‘TELE-ICU Patient Monitoring Task Force’, named as Critical Care Support Team (CCST) for COVID 19 patients admitted in ICU. This activities came into action on 13thApril , 2020 and Interns from Community Medicine department were a part of the team from the April to August, 2020. Each team from the college consisted of 6 interns and Post graduates working for an average of 15 days in the Health and Family Welfare Office, Bangalore, Government of Karnataka. Through the video-conferencing our interns were able to create a platform for the regional nodal officers and the super specialist team to monitor COVID-19 patients and interventions regarding the treatment.

COVID 19 Helpline Training Services, March, 2020:

The department was involved in Covid 19 activity from 18thMarch, 2020 as technical assistants for COVID 19 helpline. The post- graduate students were also involved in training and orientation of staff from private companies (TCS and HES) in managing COVID helpline. They were explained and oriented about adequate response and actions to be taken on receiving calls from the public. The entire process was successful in informing the general public to covid19 related health aspects and providing relief in the initial phases of the pandemic.

State Conference on Adolescent and Youth Health Promotion, April,2019 

A State Conference on Adolescent and Youth Health Promotion with the theme : Steps to a Healthier India, was conducted in collaboration with Indian Association of Adolescent Health, Department of Youth Empowerment & Sports, Government of Karnataka, Department of Epidemiology, NIMHANS, Bangalore, Adolescent Health Academy(BAHA), BBMP Roshni and Department of Community Medcine, KIMS, Bangalore on 27/04/2019. Oral and poster presentations from staff and PG students of Karnataka along with few high school children with exemplary talent presented theirpapers.

KIMS Model WHO, September 2019

The 4th KIMS Model WHO 2019 was held on 20th& 21st, September 2019 at KIMS college, Banashankari Campus. The theme for the year was “ Universal Health Coverage”. The department faculty were actively involved as faculty advisor and session judges in the two day program.

Guest Lecture, 1st March, 2019

A Guest Lecture by Dr. Jugal Kishore on Implementation of AETCOM in UG & PG Curriculum – Issues & Challenges was held at KIMS Hospital & Research Center, Bangalore on 01/03/2019. A total of 50 participants including PGs and staff in & around Bangalore attended the program.

Guest Lecture ,23rd March 2019 : A Guest lecture by our alumni ,Dr.V P Sudhashree on Health Economics and Universal Health Coverage was held on 23th March,2019.

Guest Lecture , August, 2019 : Guest Lecture by Dr.SanjayZodpey, President, IAPSM & Director, IIPH, New Delhi on “Deciphering the changing & expanding career opportunities for Community Medicine post graduate from National & Global perspective” at KIMS Hospital, Bangalore on 29/08/2019.

Indian Rabies Survey, July 2018 : The department staff along with the Association for Prevention of Control of rabies in India (APCRI) and WHO, Geneva were involved in the Indian rabies multicentric study ,2017-18. The study had 11 objectives and involved survey on animal bites and rabies ,extensive visits to seven states in the country, Information on vaccine logistics, market mapping, etc in India. The data was presented by the department staff along with APCRI at the 20th APCRICON,2018,New Delhi and final report submitted to the union health ministry ,Government of India and WHO, Geneva.

KIMS Model WHO,September2018 

The 3rdKIMS Model WHO 2018 was held on 28th&29th,September,2019 at KIMS college, Banashanakri Campus. The Model WHO is an education simulation and academic competition in which students can learn about Diplomacy, International federations, current affairs and United Nations. A total of 45 colleges from 5 states had attended the program. The department faculty were actively involved as faculty advisor and session judges in the two day program.

RGUHS school Health Program, Chikabalapur 

The Department of Community Medicine, KIMS, Bangalore in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru and satyasai institution(NGO) was involved in the School Health Examination of children in Chikbalapur District ,2018.Post graduates and Interns from the department were posted for this activity and about 5000 children screened.

18th Annual National conference of Association for Prevention of Control of rabies in India (APCRI),Bangalore

The department of community medicine, KIMS, Bangalore had organized the 18th National conference of Association for Prevention and Control of rabies in India (APCRI) at the NIMHANS convention centre, Bangalore in July, 2016.About 500 delegates had attended the conference from al over the country and other countries. Speakers from India and abroad ,WHO and OIE had disseminated information. Oral research papers and poster presentations were presented.
