Practical Lab at college
Central Lab at Hospital
The Department of Microbiology is situated in Banashankari campus of Kempegowda Institute of Medical college. The Diagnostic laboratory is located at KIMSH & RC as the part of the clinical laboratory.
The Department is proud of nurtured , skilled and dedicated work force offering routine, specialized and advanced diagnostic services.
Qualified and experienced team of six faculty members drive the medical education programmes imparting knowledge to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The department is well equipped with instruments like BACTEC BD 9050, Biosafety cabinets , Deep freezers(-80) & (-20), Lyophilizer (Delvec), Carbondioxide incubators, Cobas 6000 The department has five MD seats per year and is privileged to be recognized as PhD centre by RGUHS, Bangalore. As a part of the curriculum the department conducts regular tutorials for the UG students to make them gain confidence to face the university exams .
Active PG teaching in the department includes regular subject seminar, Journal club and culture skills along with hands on training.
We are also involved in research programmes with grants being approved by national and international agencies and with special focus in the area of Tuberculosis, HIV, Pneumococcal diseases, Dengue, Malaria and Molecular biology.
The faculty members are resourse persons for national and International organizations like KSAPS, NACO, KHPT etc. These research activities help to serve the needy and contribute to competencies of staff in academic and diagnostics.
Total Students appeared
The central laboratory Microbiology in KIMS hospital & research Centre, provides 24x7 diagnostic facilities with reliable results and reduced rates.
The facilities available in the department are Bacterial culture and sensitivity, Fungal culture and sensitivity, RNTCP for tuberculosis, Serological tests like HIV, Hepatitis B ,Hepatitis C, PCT, CRP, VDRL, ASLO, RA factor, ELISA for Dengue, Parasitology like stool for ova and cysts, Blood for malaria and filaria, RTPCR for Covid 19 by gene xpert method
The laboratory works in collaboration with clinical departments to correlate clinically with scope for research.

Crowd at Model Making Competition
Model created by students
The Department of Microbiology, in collaboration with Central Research Laboratory, KIMS had organized a molecular genetics workshop on next generation sequencing and Bioinformatics as a part of the Annual National Microbiology Conference in November 2018.
Our faculty have competently guided many ICMR projects and publications for the Undergraduates. We, the Microbiologists, are an integral part of the Hospital Infection Control Committee (HICC) and take active interest in HIC rounds and in educating the paramedical personnel about the recent advances in HIC.
We have also conducted a Microbiology- related model making competition and contributed significantly in the organization & conduct of Inter- collegiate Microbiology quiz for the Undergraduates. There have been numerous funded and non- funded scientific research projects on Dengue, malaria, HIV and Pneumococci to our credit. We are also the constant source of encouragement for our UG and PG students to compete at Quiz, poster presentations and symposiums at State and National levels.
Also, we are all enthusiastically involved in CB- NAAT diagnosis of COVID- 19 in this ongoing pandemic along with RT- PCRin collaboration with Central Research Laboratory, KIMS.
