Postgraduate LabHands on training - Drug administration |
Adequate facilities for basic experimental animal research available in the department and central animal house with facilities for housing and breeding the animals.Adequate infrastructure / facilities available for undergraduate and postgraduate training programmes.Infrastructure and documentation facilities available for Pharmacovigilance activities in the KIMS Hospital – drug information services, clinical trial registry, ADR monitoring and publication of monthly newsletters / drug updates.Departmental library with recent issues of the textbooks, monographs, journals and printouts from national and international drug regulatory authorities. |
The Pharmacovigilance Unit has been started in the 5th Floor, OPD Block, KIMS Hospital, as a part of Clinical Pharmacology Services since May 2011, as per the guidelines stipulated by the MCI and the National Pharmacovigilance Programme, to document, monitor, evaluate and report adverse drug reactions (ADRs). A Pharmacovigilance Committee has been organized to supervise these activities.
The Pharmacovigilance Unit is undertaking awareness and training programmes about pharmacovigilance among doctors, nursing and paramedical staff of the KIMS Hospital about detecting and reporting adverse drug reactions. This programme is ongoing with regular educational and awareness meetings with junior and new doctors who join KIMS Hospital. The Pharmacovigilance Unit has also been undertaking activities such as collection and compiling of the adverse drug reactions which are reported to the Pharmacovigilance Unit. The ADRs are then analyzed for causality and then reported to the Regional Pharmacovigilance Monitoring Center in JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysore.
Apart from ADR monitoring, other activities like hospital antibiotic policy, prescription auditing, scrutiny of medical records, drug information services, clinical trial protocol design are also being planned and worked out. It is also proposed to organize workshops regarding the rationale in use of antibiotics, during internships, UG and PG programmes.
REPORTING OF ADRs: The voluntarily reported ADRs are assessed for causality based on the WHO Causality Assessment Scale and transmitted to the Regional ADR Monitoring Center, JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysore.
A total of 126 (male=78; female=48) ADRs were analyzed and reported during the period from January 2012 to December 2012. Causality assessment indicated 18 ADRs were possible and 108 ADRs were probable.
FREQUENCY OF PHARMACOVIGILANCE COMMITTEE MEETINGS: The KIMS Pharmacovigilance Committee meets twice in a year (March/April and October/November).
